Following an initial assessment session, therapy typically entails one 50-minute session per week. During the assessment session, we will talk about your reasons for seeking therapy (unhealthy or unhelpful patterns of behaviour; problems; relationships, etc.); your past and present circumstances, as well as your expectations regarding the therapeutic process. Once the assessment is complete, we will discuss the nature and course of psychotherapy that I believe will best treat and address your current (presenting) problems, symptoms and diagnosis.
Engaging in therapy is a big commitment – not only in terms of time (and money), but also in terms of emotional effort. To fully engage in the process, you need to be able to take an intensive and critical look at your emotions, behaviour, beliefs and thought patterns. This requires a certain level of bravery, energy and resolute commitment. Understanding is the first step on the journey towards change and acceptance.
